Nightingale & Bombers

Ensure your speakers are on!

This recording was made on 19 May 1942 by a BBC sound engineer for the BBC. Intending to capture the nightingale's song, he also, by accident, recorded the sound of 197 RAF bombers on their way to attack Mannheim, Germany.

At first the planes are heard quietly approaching from some distance. Three minutes into this recording, the noise of the bombers' engines overhead almost overwhelms the nightingale's song.

During the raid on Mannheim, on 19th May 1942, by 197 RAF aircraft, 4 Halifaxes, 4 Stirlings and 3 Wellingtons were lost.
